Merle patterning and its associated health issues

alright, let's start with a quick definition

“also know as dapple, merle is characterized by irregular blotches of fur set on a lighter background of the same pigment, such as solid black on gray (called blue merle) or solid brown on tan (red merle).” -American Kennel Club

Merle is a dominant color gene meaning it (almost) always presents itself phenotypically when apart of the dogs genotype even when it is a heterozygous gene. merle is a very popular and desirable color and because of this is often sold by breeders for a higher price, though an ethical breeder shouldn't be charging more for a certain color.

if a merle (Mm) and a non merle (mm) are bred together there is a 50% chance each pup will be merle. if you breed two merle's (Mm) together that chance raises to 75% but, you run the risk of producing a double merle (MM) which have a heightened chance of health issues

The most common health risk with merle dogs is deafness, even single merles (Mm) have an increased likelihood of these issues. Double merles (MM) are at a even higher risk for deafness, one study finding 85% of MM dogs were bilaterally deaf.

On top of the deafness MM dogs often have very small and often non-functional eyes (microphthalmia).

double merle's can occur for a few different reasons

1. in feral/stray populations dogs will be breeding and obviously they don't understand that how genetics works so two merle's can mate producing a double merle. though it's unlikely and deaf and blind dog will survive long without human intervention

2. similar to option one is ignorance on the owners part! it may be an uneducated breeder or an oops-litter but an owner who doesn't understand or know about the dangers of double merle's make accidentally create one.

3. greed! though many double merle's are born infertile if you were to get a double merle bitch (MM) who is able to produce pups and bred her to a regular sire (mm) you would have a litter of all single merle puppies (Mm) which as previously mentioned can be sold for more.

over all, merle dogs are very pretty but you should be aware of the risks this coloring can have especially in double merle's.

Hi, so I like paw patrol. It’s a kids show about talking dogs that help people. And my favorite character is the police pup chase.

Which alot of people seem to have a problem with him, be it his affiliation with the police or his character in general. Which confuses me to no end (but you do you I guess)

Anyway just wanted to clarify a few things. This blog will be very positive towards paw patrol and the characters. There will be no ships mentioned but also no hate towards paw patrol shippers. I’m not sure whether drawing the pups as humans technically counts as furry art, but if it does, this is a safe space for furry’s either way. And lastly there will be no weirdness or overly sexual designs for the characters as humans, since in my AU they are all still teenagers.

My blog will stay more of a teen and up aged blog, because of my tendency to draw angst, however my paw patrol human au will be more towards light hearted and cute with light angst.

This is a safe space. I hope my followers will stay with me as I continue discovering my interests, them being “childish” or not. And I’m excited to gain new followers and interact in this new fandom (no matter how weird it may seem lol)

Keep your dogs on his/her leash at all times! Just because your dog is friendly DOES NOT MEAN that other people’s are! If you see someone with their dog off it’s leash, remind them of this! Dogs and people can get hurt or killed, and some might get put down due to an unleashed pet!

While I’m on the topic of dogs, remember not to ever pet a service dog without permission! It can distract the animal from performing his/her duties which can prevent the owner from getting the help they need! Some service dogs are trained to detect seizures, heart problems, etc, and some people need dogs to help them see!

Another thing to remember is to NEVER BRING YOUR PET DOG INTO A STORE! This too can distract service animals! Please, please, please! If a restaurant, hotel, store, or any other public place prohibits animals, do not bring them!

Another thing to remember is to always ask a dog’s owner before petting it! As mentioned earlier, not all dogs are friendly, and you can get hurt, which can cause the dog to get euthanized by law!

The last thing to remember is to not scold or punish a dog that doesn’t belong to you! That is the owner’s job! If the owner isn’t doing a good job of that, please inform them! Some dogs might be untrained or be puppies, so they have a tendency to bark and jump!

It's that time of year again to remind everyone that it is fucking animal abuse to not spay/neuter your pets.

"But my fur baby is indoor only."

I don't care. Animals that are not fixed get horny and their first instinct is to run outside. And if they get outside they will get pregnant/impregnate.

"But my little lady is not even a year old."

I don't care. Cats can get pregnant as early as 6-8 weeks old, and many dogs as early as 4 months.

"But surgery is expensive."

Don't get a pet if you can't take care of it. Animal neglect is a type of animal abuse and you should be charged as such.

"But they don't get fixed in nature."

Yeah but it's also natural for litters to be born too early, too late, have major complications due to kittens and puppies being able reproduce BEFORE sexual maturity, and for the parents to dump them on strangers doorsteps bc their instincts to take care of a baby haven't fully developed.

FIX YOUR GODDAMN PETS ASAP and I encourage you to peer pressure anyone who doesn't into doing it or report them to the fucking authorities.
